I’m having trouble deciding if I should get the ram 2500 with the 6.4 hemi or the f250 gasser. I like both trucks they both seem to have their issues. The 2024 f250 with 7.3 i think has the better transmission but it seems every day i look up about both trucks i find new issues. I will use it for towing our camper. I need the better payload of the 3/4 ton trucks. I’m just trying to decide which will be more reliable.
Ram 2500 or ford f250

If you haven’t heard or watched Gettys Garage on YouTube, that may help with your decision. He has a few videos directly comparing the gas HD powertrains, and he has videos of him towing with them as well. He’s a diesel mechanic as well, so he has some good insights.

Agreed on the Getty suggestion he has some great content on this.
I did have one question, why do you think the Ford transmission is better than the Ram with ZF? Are you only looking at the used models pre-ZF?
bluemtnbker
I don’t necessarily think the transmission is better than dodge i was thinking the transmission they put in that model is better than the newer f250’s.

I’m looking at new and used ones a year or two old.

I think the F250 7.3 are pretty good, the 10 speed has been decent, not as good as a powerline 8 but cheaper to fix according to NextGen Drivetrain. I think the 250 would be a decent choice, it's well liked for sure.

Thank you i really appreciate it. I do like the ram transmission better. If i could just use the ram body and transmission and use the ford motor i would be golden.

I was recently had a similar decision. The biggest issue with the F250 Gasser is the potential lifter issue, which they may have fixed, there is no clear admitance from Ford on any wrong-doing but there was a software update that was part of a stop sale last April. The thought is they bumped up the idle oil pressure with it. However, I haven't seen anyone confirm this since the F250 has an oil pressure switch rather than a sensor.
The 6.4 also has its share of lifter issues. Also it has MDS and EGR from what I understand. The 7.3 F250 does not.
The aluminum body was another selling point for the F250.
The old man step in the tailgate was a selling point for the F250, since i get in and out of there a lot.
Also, seems petty but i do like the side step on the bed towards the front. Chevy also has it, not sure why RAM hasn't built it in.
The 2024 and maybe 2023 7.3L F250 has the 10R140 behind it. I believe for 2025 and newer the 7.3L got the same trans as the 6.8L which is the 10R100, unless I think you get the Tremor.
Happy to be proven wrong on the information above.
